About Gershom Sizomu
Born in 1972, Gershom is a Ugandan Rabbi serving the Abayudaya, a Baganda community
practicing modern Judaism in eastern Uganda, near the town of Mbale. Sizomu is the first
native-born Rabbi in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is also the first Chief Rabbi of Uganda and a
member of the Ugandan Parliament. Sizomu earned his Bachelor of Arts in education from
Islamic University in Uganda, followed by a Be'chol Lashon Rabbinic Fellow at the Institute for
Jewish & Community Research and Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University in Los
Angeles.
Gadi and Joss Meir will introduce and welcome the Rabbi, and also share stories of their
recent experience in Uganda. This remote and rural community of Jews have been
practicing Judaism in obscurity, and in much the same way that we do, for the last 100+
years. Gadi and Joss will share slides and stories of their warm visit to Sabbath services
with this community.
